Les Hauts de Smith 2018
Pessac-Léognan
Fabien Teitgen’s comments,
Winemaker : Made from a blend of wines from Château Smith Haut Lafitte, Les Hauts de Smith are fermented and aged with just as much care as the Grand Vin. From the vineyard to the cellar, exactly the same winemaking techniques are used.
Yield : 28 hl/ha before production was divided into three wines: Château Smith Haut Lafitte, Les Hauts de Smith, and Le Petit Haut Lafitte.
Blending : 100% Sauvignon Blanc
Fermentation : The grapes are hand-picked into small crates and pressed in an oxygen-free environment using inert gas to retain the grapes’ aromatic potential, followed by fermentation in French oak barrels (50% new oak) and cold settling.
Ageing : 10 months on the lees and bâtonnage (lees stirring) in barrel (50% new oak) from the estate’s own
cooperage.
It is a very expressive white with crunchy flavours of white peach and pear. The wine is medium-bodied with
a nice acidity that gives it a nice length. It is a very pleasant wine, with juicy yellow fruits and a finish with
pink grapefruit and broom flower.
Le Petit Haut Lafitte red 2015
Wine from the young vines of Château Smith Haut Lafitte
Created during the blending process of Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte, Le Petit Haut Lafitte is vinified and aged with the same care as the Grand Vin in our positive energy cellar. From the vineyard to the cellar, all the production techniques are identical.
Yield: 35 hl/ha, before selection of the three wines: Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte, Le Petit Haut Lafitte and Les Hauts de Smith.
Blend 60 % Cabernet Sauvignon 40 % Merlot Vinification of whole berries in small wooden vats at 26-28°C for 4 to 6 weeks, extraction through pigeages and/or remontages.
Ageing 14 months in French oak barrels (20 % new) made at the Chateau onsite cooperage.
Better enjoyed after 2018. Le Petit Haut Lafitte red 2015
Wine from the young vines of Château Smith Haut Lafitte
The year 2015 was marked by a long drought from March to July and a month of August rather cool and wet, causing early maturation while maintaining a beautiful freshness.
Thanks to a precocious water stress we have a large productionof tannins and a beautiful maturation of them. The harvest lasted for 4 weeks, slowly, following the tannin maturation process. We harvested our grapes at their optimum.
The harvest of the red grapes started on September 14th with the young Merlot grapes and on 22nd of September for the old Merlot vines. Then, the Petit Verdot on October 2nd, the Cabernet Sauvignon from 5th to 12th of October and we finished with our Cabernet Franc. It was a pleasure to harvest these perfectly ripped and balanced grapes, with a beautiful weather…
Le Petit Haut Lafitte red 2015 has a dark red color deep and dense.
The nose expresses an elegant blend of red and black fruits, cherry, raspberry, blackcurrant with some empyreumatic and aromatic herbs notes.
The palate is rich and concentrated with a good acidity and nice tanins. We recognize Cabernet Sauvignons’ style ! The palet is aromatic and delicate with fresh fruits, pierre à fusil, eucalyptus, dry herb notes and a lovely floral touch.
